AI builders like Lovable, Bolt, and v0 have made the first version of a product radically cheaper and faster than it was two years ago. A founder with an idea and a credit card can ship a working demo in a weekend. The same founder, two years ago, was either paying a contractor $15,000 for an MVP or learning to code. Neither path was the right shape for early-stage validation, and AI builders filled the gap.

The problem is that AI builders also have a ceiling. Every founder who builds past the first month runs into it. Every AI builder gets you to 70% of a production-ready app fast and cheap. That number is an average across the apps we’ve audited, and it’s remarkably consistent. A Lovable SaaS MVP arrives at our audit queue about 70% ready for paying customers. A Bolt app, about the same. A v0-driven frontend with custom backend work, also about the same. The 30% that’s missing is not random — it’s a specific set of production concerns that AI builders consistently under-deliver on.

Supabase row-level security.This is the single most common gap. Supabase’s RLS is opt-in; AI builders generate working tables and queries without enabling it. The app looks like it works — users can sign up, create records, and see their own data. What’s invisible is that any authenticated user can read any other user’s data by changing a query parameter in the browser’s developer tools. We’ve audited apps with thousands of paying customers where the entire customer list was readable by any signed-up free-tier user. Fix: a developer auditing every table and writing policies. Cost: a full day.

Stripe webhook surface. AI builders wire checkout.session.completed, which creates a new subscription when a user pays. They typically do not wire invoice.paid (so recurring charges don’t extend the subscription end date), customer.subscription.deleted (so cancelled users keep premium access indefinitely), or invoice.payment_failed (so dunning never starts). They also frequently skip webhook signature verification, which means an attacker who knows the webhook URL can POST forged events and grant themselves free subscriptions. Fix: a few hours to add the missing handlers and a day to backfill affected users. Cost: a day or two.

Auth hardening. Sign-up and log-in work. What fails in production: email verification links that expire before users click them, password reset tokens that can be reused, session persistence on page refresh, OAuth callback URLs hardcoded to localhost, and multi-device session invalidation. Each of these generates support tickets in the first week of launch. Fix: two to three hours per issue, total of a day or two across the set.

Custom integrations.Integrations with specific SaaS APIs — the kind that aren’t in the AI builder’s training data — are where AI builders slow down most dramatically. The first time you ask Lovable to integrate with a niche CRM or a specific accounting API, the attempt takes hours and produces working-but-fragile code. The second time, it takes more hours. A developer can write an API integration in half a day; an AI builder can take a week and still produce code that fails silently on edge cases. Fix: done as part of a feature engagement. Cost: varies.

Monitoring and observability.AI builders don’t add Sentry, structured logging, or analytics by default. When something breaks in production, you have no way to find out — no error tracking, no log aggregation, no alerts. A customer hits a bug, leaves, and you never know it happened. Fix: a day to wire Sentry, add a logging abstraction, and set up a dashboard. Cost: a day.

Add these up and the math is about two weeks of developer time to close the gap from “the demo works” to “paying customers don’t lose data.” That is the 30% that AI builders don’t deliver, and it’s the specific work a developer earns their cost on. A founder who tries to skip this work is not saving money; they’re deferring it until the first incident, at which point the cost is higher because the incident has happened.

What is the AI fix loop and how do you escape it?

The fix loop is the moment an AI builder stops being productive. You ask the AI to fix a bug; it fixes the bug and breaks something else. You ask it to fix the new bug; it fixes that and re-breaks the first one. Each prompt costs more patience than the last, each fix takes more attempts, and somewhere around the fifth or sixth round, the founder realizes they’ve spent the entire day re-prompting and the app is in worse shape than when they started. This is the fix loop, and once you’re in it, you don’t get out without a developer.

The cause is not mysterious. AI builders work by loading some fraction of your codebase into a context window and generating output against that fraction. On a small codebase, the context window holds everything relevant, so the AI’s mental model matches reality and its output is consistent. As the codebase grows, the fraction shrinks. Eventually the AI is generating code against an incomplete understanding of the project — fixing the symptom it can see in one file without noticing that the fix conflicts with a pattern three directories away. The result is regressions that the AI itself introduces and then fails to catch.

Signs you’re in the fix loop.A change that used to take one prompt now takes five. The AI produces fixes that compile and fail at runtime. A feature that worked last week is broken today, and you don’t remember what changed. You find yourself explaining the codebase to the AI over and over again — telling it, for the third time, what the auth context is called, or where the shared types live. You revert changes and notice the revert broke something too. Support tickets are arriving in waves, not trickles.

Why the AI can’t escape on its own.The fix loop is a coherence problem. The AI doesn’t have enough of the codebase in context to produce coherent changes, and no amount of prompting will give it more. You can try: longer prompts, more explicit file references, restarting the chat. Each helps at the margins and none of it fixes the underlying issue. What the AI needs is a global understanding of the codebase that it structurally cannot have, because it’s operating on a context window smaller than the codebase. The escape requires an agent (human) who can hold the whole thing in their head.

How a developer escapes it.The process is not glamorous. A developer takes the codebase, reads it end to end, and makes a list of the patterns that are inconsistent — the places where the AI has generated conflicting solutions to similar problems. They then standardize: pick one pattern per class of problem, refactor the inconsistent places to match, and add tests that will catch future drift. The refactor itself is the easy part. The reading is the hard part, and it’s the part the AI fundamentally cannot do because the AI cannot read the whole codebase coherently at the scale the codebase has reached.

How long does the escape take?For an app that’s been in the fix loop for a few weeks, a week of developer time usually restores coherence. For an app that’s been in the fix loop for six months, it can take two to four weeks because the accumulated inconsistencies are deeper. The signal that a rewrite is cheaper than a rescue is when the codebase has no single coherent pattern anywhere — when every file is its own island of idiosyncratic choices, and finding a pattern to standardize on requires writing one rather than picking one. This is rare but does happen on apps that have been “fixed” by the AI for a year or more.

The practical takeaway: treat the fix loop as a bright-line indicator. The first time a fix breaks a second feature, note it. The second time, note it. By the third time, book a developer audit. Catching the loop early is the difference between a one-week rescue and a month-long rebuild.

On paper, AI builders look dramatically cheaper than developers. A Lovable Pro subscription is $25 a month. A developer engagement for a production-ready MVP is $7,500. The first number is $300 a year. The second is roughly 25x that. The obvious move is the AI builder. The less obvious move is to look at the full 12-month cost curve, including the hidden costs that compound over time.

Months 1–3.AI builder is meaningfully cheaper. $25–100/mo in subscriptions, hours to first demo, a working app with real users. A developer engagement in this phase is premature: you don’t know what you’re building yet, the product will change shape three times before month four, and most of the developer’s work would be discarded. The AI builder’s fast iteration is a genuine advantage when the product is still being discovered. Cost to date: ~$150. Advantage: AI builder.

Months 4–6. The AI builder starts slowing down. Features that took an hour in month two take three or four hours in month five, because the codebase has grown and the AI is making more inconsistent choices. The founder is spending real time — often 10 to 20 hours a week — re-prompting and fixing AI regressions. If founder time is worth $100/hour, this is $4,000 to $8,000 per month in hidden cost, on top of the $25 subscription. Months 10–12.If the founder has switched to a developer by now, the app is stabilized, features are shipping cleanly, and the cost per feature is back to being predictable. The difference between the two paths at month 12 is enormous: the founder who switched has a growing business with a clean codebase; the founder who didn’t has a stalled business with an accreting pile of technical debt.

The hidden costs.Founder time is the biggest and most ignored. A founder spending 30 hours a week fighting an AI builder is not talking to customers, not selling, not raising money, not recruiting. Whatever they’re not doing is the actual cost of staying on the AI builder too long. Second: user churn from unresolved bugs, which compounds because the customers you lose are also the customers who would have told their friends. For a founder whose time is worth more than the developer’s fee — which is every founder who has found product-market fit — the developer path is cheaper in real terms from the moment the fix loop starts. The art is recognizing that moment and making the switch before the fix loop runs long enough to damage the business.

What should you hand a developer when moving off an AI builder?

The moment a founder decides to hand off an AI-built app to a developer, the quality of that handoff determines how fast the developer can start producing value. A clean handoff means the developer ships their first real improvement within the first week. A messy handoff means two weeks of asking “what is this supposed to do?” before any productive work happens. The difference between the two is a handful of artifacts, and most founders can prepare them in a few hours.

The GitHub repo.This is the non-negotiable. If the code lives only inside an AI builder’s sandbox, the first job is to export it. Most builders have a “push to GitHub” option; use it. Give the developer access before the engagement starts, so they can clone the repo and poke around on day zero. If the app doesn’t build locally for the developer — missing dependencies, broken config, env vars not documented — that’s the first thing they’ll fix, and you can shortcut it by having a working local setup documented.

A README with the basics.What the app is supposed to do. Which stack it uses. How to run it locally. Where the production deploy lives. Who the current paying users are (anonymized is fine — just a count and a brief profile). What payment processor. What database. What auth provider. This document should take an hour to write and saves three days of developer onboarding. The most common mistake is thinking “the code explains itself.” It doesn’t — the code explains what happens, not why, and the developer needs both.

Supabase access (or the equivalent). Read access to the production database schema and a dev instance they can write to freely. If the app uses Supabase, invite the developer to the Supabase project with appropriate permissions. If it uses a different backend (Neon, Firebase, a custom API), provide the equivalent. Without database access, the developer is guessing about data shapes, and guessing produces bugs.

Environment variables.A clear list of every env var the app uses, what it’s for, and where the values come from. Separate lists for development and production. Do not send secrets over email — use 1Password, a shared vault, or a secure channel. A developer who has to reverse-engineer which env vars exist and where their values come from is spending time they could be using to build.

Stripe dashboard access (if applicable). Read access, at minimum. The developer will need to verify webhook configurations, confirm which products exist, and diagnose payment bugs. Trying to debug Stripe integration without dashboard access is like diagnosing a car problem by looking at the dashboard lights — you can see symptoms but not causes.

The “what the app does vs. what it’s supposed to do” list.This is the most useful artifact and the least commonly provided. A list of known bugs: what’s broken, when it broke, how it manifests, how you know. A list of features that half-work: what the intent was, what currently happens, where the gap is. A list of features that have been attempted and abandoned: what was tried, why it didn’t work, what residue remains in the codebase. This document lets the developer triage before they start, and it prevents the common failure mode of a developer “fixing” something that was never broken because they didn’t know the intended behaviour.

Customer support context. Even a simple one — a list of the last ten support tickets you received, what they were about, and how you resolved them. This gives the developer a fast read on what your users actually struggle with, which is different from what you think they struggle with. If you have an intercom or zendesk, read access is a gift.

Common omissions.The things founders most frequently forget, and that most slow developers down: the staging environment setup (or confirmation that there isn’t one), the deploy process (who pushes to prod, how), the DNS and domain configuration, the third-party service accounts (Sentry, analytics, email provider), and the seat licensing for those services (does the developer get their own logins, or are they sharing yours?). Each of these takes five minutes to document and saves hours of friction.

The bottom line: the handoff is a project itself, and treating it seriously pays back within the first week. Spend the time.
